#037 - The Resilient - On Music & Perseverance

The stage of Madison Square Garden is where the members of The Resilient first met and played together. Our very own Greg was working as a musician and freelance teacher in DC at the time. Tim, Dom, and Nathan had been living at Walter Reed Military hospital after recovering from life altering injuries received in Afghanistan. After a few years of playing together on and off, The Resilient was formed on Nantucket Island in the fall of 2017. They join us today, alongside Greg (of course), to share their stories.

Singer Tim Donley didn’t exactly ask to be made the band’s front man, but his drive and relentless optimism took over when the band pushed him to grab the mic & he’s more than met the challenge. We discuss how the band met, some of those early challenges and how he faced them head on (with a little on-stage help from Roger Waters’) and how he sees resilience as the characteristic that fuels and the band & his own life.

Rhythm guitarist Nathan Kalwicki started playing guitar around 14 and caught the metal bug. When he and Greg first met, they immediately bonded over their love of the genre and became quick friends thereafter. We discuss the band’s song writing process, what he believes the band stands for, some music he’s excited about these days and how all of the above resonates now, during the COVID-19 pandemic, more than ever.
Songs:
Sturgill Simpson - Remember to Breath
The Resilient - Last Memory

Drums are Dom Dominguez’s 4th instrument, having learned trumpet, guitar & bass during his school years. He joined the Marines after school and, during a tour in Afghanistan, was wounded by an IED, resulting in the loss of both legs and his right arm. It was sometime during, or shortly after, his recovery & PT that he decided to make the switch to drums & he hasn’t looked back. He shares with us the logistics of his process, his friendship with Roger Waters &, most important, how music has remained a steadfast fixture in his life.
Song: The Resilient - Accept the End
