#133 - What’s in a Bandleader? | Satriani Weighs In | Spotify Alternatives

Another topic inspired by interviews with Jon Batiste, Nick kicks the show off with a question: What makes a good bandleader? We discuss this a good bit and end up working on another question as well, does every band need a leader?

Song: Tame Impala - "The Boat I Row"

Greg was reading a Guitar World interview with Joe Satriani from the week past. In the interview, Satriani is asked what exercises he recommends to students. His response was, essentially, I'm not entirely sure I'm qualified to answer that because a lot of these kids on Instagram "play so much better than I could ever play in terms of speed, dexterity and complexity". He followed that incredible compliment with the suggestion, "Young people have to understand they should spend more time playing music for people and with people because that’s our job as musicians". Do they though? Is Satriani's point valid or is just another Boomer throwing complimentary shade at the next in line?

Song: Joe Satriani - "Surfing With The Alien"

Finally, Jay spent the last week looking at all the Spotify-alternatives he could find. He brings a feature list, price comparison & artists compensation comparisons. Nick & Greg provide anecdotal thoughts about their preferred streaming services, Apple Music & Tidal.
Song: Bernard Purdie - “Soul Drums”
