#041 - The Caretaker’s Forgotten Opus, Thanks Little Richard, The Kids are Alright

Jay brings us the fascinating story behind The Caretaker’s Everywhere At The End Of Time. A 390 minute composition, separated by 6 movements, or stages as he calls them. Each stage is meant to represent a stage of dementia and the experience, which begins quite pleasantly (and was inspired by the music that plays during the bar scene from The Shining), slowly degrades throughout the piece, ultimately ending in madness (there’s amazing art that goes along with it as well). Jay spent a day listening to the entire piece and brings some selections to all of us to partake in. We also discuss some of the controversy surrounding the composer, James Leyland Kirby’s decision to announce that The Caretaker has, with the completion of the project, died as well.

Nick remembers Little Richard, who died at the age of 87 this past weekend of cancer. He was a founding father of Rock & Roll and influenced pretty much everything that’s happened since the 60’s… He shall be missed, but his legacy will, absolutely without a doubt, never leave us.

Greg’s been spending more time reflecting on his teaching the past few months and shares some of the music his students have been asking him to teach them. He also had a really interesting reflection, what happens to musical tastes, and music appreciation in general, when nearly everything you could think to listen to is completely accessible to anyone connected to the internet? Immediately feeling old for remembering a time when a new CD a week was living large (and required a job), the guys dive right in. Long story short, practice more you damn kids, you will never have this much free time again in your life…also, keep bringing Greg good music, YSCIO (& hopefully the listeners) appreciate it greatly ;-)

Polyphia - G.O.A.T.
