#060 - Tyler Childers, Van Morrison & The Return of the Guitar!?

Jay nails the song & topic pairing for the week with a story about the song “Long Violent History” by Tyler Childers. Written during a moment of national reflection following the killing of George Floyd & Breona Taylor, it’s now, just a few months later, being released to a country with a very different mindset. In anticipation of the blowback from some fans, Tyler released an accompanying video imploring anyone unreceptive to his desire to create empathy with his fellow black Americans to seek moral clarity over polarization & tribalism. It’s a heavy start, but a great discussion.

Nick brings us more songs of controversy. Van Morrison is releasing three new tracks in the near future that characterize the pandemic as a government hoax to enslave all citizens, so that sucks. We discuss whether this qualifies as a ‘protest song’, whether it was necessary for the Northern Ireland health minister to issue a full response, whether it’s socially irresponsible for Van Morrison to be saying this stuff, and where we stand on all of this crap.

Greg elevates the mood considerably with the news that, despite reports from The Washington Post back in 2017, the guitar is very much alive! With sales breaking records across the country, we mostly make fun of The Washington Post, but then we return to celebrating all the new guitars in their new homes and all the great music yet to be made!
